Tips For Your Maternity Session

Over the past decade as a maternity and newborn photographer, I’ve had the privilege of being a part of countless once in a lifetime moments in my clients lives, and I’ve learned how to make a maternity photo session truly special. Whether you are wanting to take advantage of our beautiful sunny beaches, have a more intimate session indoors, or want a combination of the two, we have you covered.  But let’s face it, regardless of the location  – stepping in front of the camera, especially with a growing bump can be a bit daunting, so I’ve put together some tips for a stress-free and relaxed maternity portrait session.

Finding Your Photographer

The first step in planning your maternity session is finding a photographer you feel comfortable with – someone who understands your personality and style, and can make you feel at ease. As a Merritt Island maternity photographer, I take pride in connecting with my clients and bringing their vision to life. Feel free to browse my portfolio on my website to see if my work seems like a good match for what you’re looking for and reach out to us with any questions you may have.

Preparing for Your Session

Before your session, we’ll need to do some planning in advance and I always recommend scheduling an appointment to meet at the studio.  Plan to bring any of your own outfits you are considering wearing for your session.  You’ll want to choose outfits that make you feel amazing, but remember to avoid busy patterns and logos. Think solid colors, flowy dresses, and form-fitting tops to highlight your beautiful bump.  You may also want to bring along things like accessories, a favorite shirt of your husbands and lingerie, especially if you’re considering any intimate portraits.  Depending on the style of the clothing you choose, a strapless bra may be needed, and you’ll want to keep in mind your body shape and size is constantly changing during your pregnancy, so you’ll want to make sure you try on your undergarments close to your session date as you made need to purchase new items in advance.  At Jennifer Shaver Photography, we have a variety of maternity clothing, gowns, and accessories available at the studio that you are welcome to wear for your session and you will have the opportunity to see and try on our things if you’d like during your appointment. To avoid any last-minute stress on your part and ours, please feel free to bring any ideas you have for your dream poses or setups and share them with us in advance. You can even create a Pinterest board of inspiration to visualize your perfect session.

During Your Session

If you decide to book with us, we want you to feel pampered the day of your session, so we include both a catered lunch, and hair and make up services by one of our professional stylists as a complimentary part of your experience.  Being treated with a professional stylist not only takes away a lot of the stress of the day, but it also makes sure your natural beauty is enhanced for your portraits.  You will be guided through posing and the pre-planned setups so you won’t need to worry about a thing, and enough time is built in for you to take breaks to rest and rehydrate as needed.

You can also bring along your favorite music- music playing during your session can definitely help you relax and set the mood for your session.

Enjoy the Moment

Remember to embrace your beautiful, pregnant body and show off those curves with confidence. It’s essential at this point to let go of any expectations you may have for your maternity photo session and forget about getting the perfect shot or looking a certain way. This is a time to celebrate the love between you and the new life growing inside of you. Instead, focus on enjoying the moment and trust your photographer will capture the magic. If you include your partner or other children in the session, let your love for them and your growing family shine through in your photos. After all, the most beautiful photos come from genuine emotions and connections. One day your little one will see these images and I want the first thing they see is how much they were loved even before they were born.

Final Thought

To make the experience even more special, consider making it a date. This could mean anything from taking the entire day off with your partner, to simply having dinner at your favorite restaurant after your session.  Take advantage of how beautiful you’re looking after your pampering!

I’ve had the honor of capturing the love and joy of countless expectant couples throughout Brevard County, Florida, and I’d love for you to be another one of them.
